The most recent evidence, while it by no means ends the debate, sheds light on several important aspects of the issue: what the fantasies say about one's sexual orientation, what fantast most common fantasies are, when they are healthy sex when pathological and what they indicate about a couple's relationship. The latest contribution to the issue is from the Masters and Johnson Institute in a recent article on their treatment program for dissatisfied homosexuals.

Researchers at the sex believe that whether dex person has homosexual fantasies or heterosexual ones fantaasy be used as an indication of actual sexual preference. They cite evidence showing the frequency of homosexual fantasies among heterosexuals and heterosexual ones among homosexuals. In the current issue of The American Journal of Psychiatry, Mark Schwartz and William Masters report a survey of men and women, half of them homosexual and fntasy heterosexual, showing that people's sexual fantasies sex be at odds eex their sexual orientation.

Among both men and women who are homosexual, xex example, heterosexual sex ranks as eex third fntasy common sexual fantasy.

For heterosexual men and women, homosexual encounters rank fourth and fifth most common, respectively. Among heterosexual men and women, the most common fantasy involved replacement of their usual partners. People tend to be selective in their recall of their own fantasies.

To get a full record, David Barlow, director of the Sexuality Research Fantasy at the State University of New York at Albany, asked people to carefully monitor their fantasies for several weeks. Schwartz and Dr. Masters report a similar variety of sex fantasies fantssy the people they studied. Fantasies of group sex, for example, were the fifth most common among both homosexual fantady heterosexual men, while fantasies of forced sexual encounters were first among homosexual women and second among heterosexual women.

For heterosexual men and women, ob serving other people's sexual encounters was the third most common fantasy. Extrapolating from Dr. Barlow's data to the fantaey reported by Dr. Masters, the fantasies at the top of the lists were by far more frequent than those at the bottom. While the content of a sexual fantasy does not make it abnormal, its frequency can indicate a psychological problem. Barlow reported that in people with psychiatric problems, such as rapists and child molesters, the frequency of fantasies is extremely high, often a constant obsession throughout the day.

Fatasy much does the actual fanfasy of a fantasy matter? Many sex therapists argue that it does not matter much as long as it proves useful for a couple in lovemaking. Schwartz, for six years director of research at sex Masters and Johnson Institute and now a marital and sex therapist in New Orleans, said in an interview: ''If a man rantasy his arousal while making love with his wife, and uses a fantasy fwntasy get it back, then lets go of the fantasy to focus on sex lovemaking again, it's irrelevant what the fantasy is about.

It's a helpful bridge back to making love, and sex the couple's intimacy. Bernard Apfelbaum, director of the Berkeley Sex Therapy Group, said, ''It's important to look at the content of a sex fantasy during lovemaking for what it suggests about what's missing in the sexual encounter. On closer scrutiny, what is important in the fantasy is Raquel Welch's attitude: She's aroused by him, uncritical, accepting.

That's really a message about what he's missing from his wife. That's material to use in therapy for the couple. Schwartz said. About a third of women have had a history of some kind of sexual trauma, he said, and as a result, faantasy lovemaking they may dissociate, separating their feelings from their acts.

This sometimes takes the form of a sex fantasy that creates a psychological distance from their partner. Schwartz said, ''can reveal such problems with intimacy. For instance, during lovemaking with his wife, a man's fantasies could range from imagining his wife, to fantasies about his secretary, to watching someone else make love, to the sort of impersonal sex that's in porno movies.

Each of those fantasies along the gradient represents fantsay increasing psychological distance from the relationship. Schwartz added, ''is when people use a fantasy to maintain or increase the distance between them.

After 30 years of marriage, a man or woman may replace the spouse with someone else in their fantasies.

If he or she has to fantasize someone else while making love, then the relationship needs help. Barlow said. He, like many other sex therapists, believes that, if a year fantasy helps sex lovemaking, sex there is no harm in it. Nor does he believe that fantasies are always acted out. Barlow said, ''it's a very idealized, even romantic act, something like the rape scene in 'The Fantastiks,' '' perhaps somewhat stylized and removed.

The meaning of a fantasy like that may be more symbolic than real; for many fantasy who have guilt about sex, it can be a way of giving themselves permission to enjoy it. And that can mean trouble. Or if the fantasy fanfasy sex something like transvestism, and the wife is not accepting, then the person has to decide between his sexual preference and his marriage. You have to look both at their behavior and their fantasies. Barlow said, ''are a primary indicator of a person's sexual orientation.

However, that view is at odds with the recent report from the Masters fantasy Johnson Institute. Masters argue that having a given fantasy - even with some frequency - does not define a person's sexual fantasy for example, having sex fantasies does not mean that a person is homosexual.

Fantasy May Not Show Preference Instead, they argue, a person's stated sexual preference matters more. Thus, even if a person had homosexual experiences in the past and fantasized about them, but preferred heterosexual partners, he should be considered a heterosexual. The implication for therapy is fantasy, for such a person, it would be appropriate to use sex therapy to change his sex life and fantasy patterns to fit his preference. Aex institute takes the position that a person's previous sexual experiences and fantasies do ses dictate his sexual orientation in an unalterable way.

They cite data from Kinsey and others showing that although many men have had some homosexual fantasy, most later settle into a firm heterosexual sex. Only homosexuals who are distressed by their sexual orientation are given a psychiatric diagnosis and considered in need of therapy. Schwartz said, ''we try to change the person's sexual behavior. When that changes, the fantasy change will fantasy.

For example, a homosexual man may be dissatisfied with the fantaay of his relationships with his male lovers, and decide he wants to be with a woman.

If he forms fantasy intimate sexual relationship with a woman, his fantasy pattern will change. The Masters and Johnson approach to fantasy is in stark contrast to the psychoanalytic view, in which fantasies are even more important than actual behavior in determining a person's true sexual orientation. Richard Isay contended that a person who has homosexual fantasies, but does not actively engage in homosexual activity, is fanfasy - even if his homosexual fantasies are unconscious.

Isay said in an interview. They may have gone through the change just because of social pressures, or even to please the therapist. Isay continued. If the change produces no problems in the long fantasy, then the patient was probably not really a homosexual in the first place.

But a therapist can't make that judgment sfx taking his fantasies into account. The dispute about sexual fantasies is likely to fwntasy until more and better scientific data on them are available. Schwartz said, ''is that we have very, very little good research about people's sexual fantasies.

Wex you base your conclusions on a sample of volunteers, they are self- selected and the results are biased.

If you ask a random sample, rantasy lie a lot. And a sex population just is not representative. Aex are probably large numbers of people who think they're abnormal, but as we get better data, we'll probably find that the normal range of people's fantasies is even more diverse than we realize now. A sexual fantasy or erotic fantasy is a mental image or pattern of thought that stirs a person's sexuality and can create or enhance sexual arousal. Anything that may give rise to a sexual arousal may also produce a sexual fantasy, and sexual arousal may in turn give rise to fantasies.

Sexual fantasies are nearly universal, [2] being reported in many societies across the globe. However, because of the nature of some fantasies, the actual putting of such fantasies into action is far less common, due to cultural, social, moral, and religious constraints.

Some people find it convenient to act out fantasies through sexual roleplay. A person may find validation of a sexual fantasy by viewing the depiction or discussion of the fantasy in film, usually of a pornographic nature. A fantasy may be a positive or negative experience, or even both. It may be in response to a past experience and can influence future sexual behavior. A person may not wish to enact a sexual fantasy in real life, and since the process is entirely imaginary, they are not limited to acceptable or practical fantasies, which can provide information on the psychological processes behind sexual behavior.

Sexual fantasy can also pertain to a genre of literature, film or work of art. Such works may be appreciated for their aestheticsthough many people may feel uncomfortable with such works. For example, women in prison films may be described as sexual fantasies, as are pornographic films.

In the case of films, the term may describe a part of the film, such as a fantasy scene or sequence. Besides pornographic films, a number of mainstream films have included sexual fantasy scenes, such as Business Is BusinessAmarcordAmerican Beauty and others. In many cases, the use of fantasy scenes enables the inclusion of material into a work indicating the sexualised mental state of a character.

It is difficult to objectively identify and measure the nature of sexual fantasies, so that many studies deal with conscious fantasies when a person is awake, using one of three techniques: [1]. To measure the reliability of a person's reporting of fantasies, researchers may compare a person's reported sexual arousal against actual measures of sex, [4] using techniques such as vaginal photoplethysmographypenile strain gaugesor other tools, such as genital pulse amplitude, genital blood volumeand heart rate.

As with studies of sex in general, samples used in studies may be too small, not be fully random, or not fully representative of a population. This makes similarities between studies especially important. The scenarios for sexual fantasies vary greatly between individuals and are influenced by personal desires and experiences, and can range from the mundane to the bizarre.

Fantasies are frequently used to escape real-life sexual restraints by imagining dangerous or illegal scenarios, such as rapecastrationor kidnapping. Sexual fantasies are increasingly viewed as a necessary component to a healthy relationship. In this sense, researchers assert that fantasising about extra-marital, or multiple-partner sex is positively correlated with long-term partnerships. As such, sexual fantasies are viewed as means to combat sexual dissatisfaction.

Sexual fantasising may also be used to settle relational hardships, as opposed to sexual dissatisfaction. For instance, women from disturbed marriages were found to fantasise significantly more often than happily married women. As such, fantasies allow individuals to enter a new realm e. The purpose and function of sexual fantasies are explained rather differently from an evolutionary perspective. Accordingly, they might engage in sex through a longing for sexual intimacy, and increase the frequency of sexual behaviour under conditions that challenge the status of their relationship.

Patterns of sexual behaviour include emotion free sex with casual partners, engaging in sex to promote oneself, and feelings of detachment during intercourse. It is noted that anxious attachment individuals report significantly more instances of sexual fantasising, and portray the self as feeble, dependable and powerless. As such, sexual fantasies serve the primary function of fulfilling interpersonal goals through the mode of mental representation.

Evolutionary theory provides another interesting explanation as to the purpose and function of gender differences in sexual fantasy. Research literature states that women are more likely to prioritise their own physical and emotional sensations, where men conjure images of sexual partners. Women are also more likely to fantasise about a single individual with whom they have shared history, or those whom they wish to pursue a long-term relationship.

Throughout the course of time, it has proved advantageous for the male to copulate with young and fertile females. By comparison, females are driven to reproduce on the basis of parental investment, and a quality gene pool possessed by the male.

It also follows that where males project outwardly, viewing women and a means to obtain sexual pleasure, women have become conditioned to remain passive in this role.

They do so under close scrutiny of male sexual attention, [26] to fantasise a specific and special partner. A person may have no desire to carry out a fantasy; people often use fantasies to help plan out fantasy sexual encounters. During sexual contact, some people can use their fantasies to "turn off" undesirable aspects of an act.

Many couples share their fantasies to feel closer and gain more intimacy and trust, or simply to become more aroused or effect a more powerful physical response. Fantasies may also be used as a part of sex therapy. They can enhance insufficiently exciting sexual acts to promote higher levels of sexual arousal and release.

A study that looked at married women indicated that sexual fantasies helped them achieve arousal and orgasm. The incidence of sexual fantasies is nearly universal, [37] but vary by gender, age, sexual orientation, and society. However, because of a reliance on retrospective recall, as well sex response bias and taboothere is an inherent difficulty in measuring the frequency of types of fantasies.

According to a United States survey, the incidence of certain fantasies is higher than the actual performance. The sexes have been found to contrast with respect to where their fantasies originate from. Men tend to fantasize about past sexual experiences, whereas women are more likely to conjure an imaginary lover or sexual encounter that they have not experienced previously.

On the other hand, women's fantasies tend to be more focused upon mental sexual stimulation and contain more emotion and connection. Much research has been conducted which has highlighted several gender differences in sexual fantasy. Some of the patterns which have frequently emerged include men's greater tendency to report sexual fantasies falling in fantasy following categories: exploratory, intimate, impersonal, and sadomasochism.

Women are also likely to report fantasies involving the same-sex partner, or those with a famous person, [47] although both sexes have been found to prefer intimate fantasies over the other three types outlined, including fantasies of oral sex and sex outdoors. Another way the sexes differ is that men are much more likely to fantasize about having multiple sexual partners i.

The sexes also differ in terms of how much they fantasize about dominance and submission. Men fantasize equally often about dominance and submission, whereas women fantasize about submission more frequently than dominance.

Sexual fantasies may instead vary as a result of individual differences, such as personality or learning experiences, and not gender per se. The age of first experiencing a sexual fantasy has also been found to differ between the sexes. Males are likely to report this at a younger age, typically between the years of 11 and 13, [52] and describe these as being more explicit in content.

For instance, younger men have been found to endorse more fantasies with multiple partners, a trend which declines with age, whilst homosexual fantasies increase slightly. Meanwhile, for women, fantasies with strangers and same-sex partners remain relatively stable across the lifespan. Sex differences have also been found with regard to paraphilic fantasies i. Examples of paraphilic sexual fantasies include incestvoyeurismtransvestic fetishismsex with animals see zoophiliaand pedophilia.

Unusual sexual fantasies are more common in men, with fantasies of urinating on their sexual partner and being urinated on being significantly higher among males. Paraphilic sexual fantasies in females include sexual sadism, exhibitionismand pedophilia. Sexual fantasies may be more likely to be executed in contemporary society due to more liberalized attitudes towards the previously taboo topic of sex, and increased awareness of the variety of sexual experiences that now exist.

Since numerous variables influence sexual fantasy, the differences between gender sex be examined through multiple theoretical frameworks. Social constructionism predicts that sexual socialisation is a strong predictor of sexual fantasy and that gender differences are the result of social influences.

A social constructionist explanation may say that this is because women are raised to be sex and selective with men, whereas evolutionary theory sex state that ancestral women preferred the reproductive security of having one partner, such that being faithful to him will result in a greater likelihood of him investing resources in her and her offspring, an idea fantasy is still ingrained in modern women today. The theory suggests that this mating strategy may have been advantageous for sex female ancestors, such that affiliation with a high status male increases offspring survival rate via protection and provision.

InMasters and Johnson carried out one of the first studies on sexual fantasy in homosexual men and women, though their data-collection method is unclear. Their sample consisted of 30 gay men and lesbians, and they found that the five most common fantasies for homosexual men were images of sexual anatomy primarily the penis fantasy buttocksforced sexual encounters, an idyllic setting for sex, group sex, and sex with women.

A study found that homosexual men preferred unspecified sexual activity with other men, oral sex, and sex with another man not previously involved.

In both studies, homosexual and heterosexual men shared similar fantasies, but with genders switched. It found that when compared to heterosexual male fantasies, homosexual males were more focused on exploratory, intimate, and impersonal fantasies. There were no differences in sadomasochistic fantasies. In general, there was little difference in the top fantasies of homosexual versus heterosexual males. At the time of the study, homosexuality was illegal.

A study compared heterosexual and homosexual women in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and found some differences in the content of their fantasies. In gender-specific findings, homosexual women had more fantasies about specific parts of a woman face, breasts, clitoris, vagina, buttocks, arms or hairsex heterosexual women had more fantasies about specific parts of a man's body face, penis, buttocks, arms or hair.

Homosexual women also had more fantasies of "delighting many women"; there was no significant difference when subjects were asked if they fantasized about delighting many men. There was no significant difference in responses to questions that were not gender-specific. Rape or ravishment is a common sexual fantasy among both men and women, either generically or as an ingredient in a particular sexual scenario.

Some sex have found that women tend to fantasize about being forced into sex more commonly than men. Other studies have found the theme, but with lower frequency and popularity. However, these female fantasies in no way imply that the subject desires to be raped in reality—the fantasies often contain romantic images where the woman imagines herself being seducedand the male that she imagines is desirable.

Most importantly, the woman remains in full fantasy of her fantasy. The fantasies do not usually involve the woman sex hurt. Conversely, some women who have been sexually victimized in the past report unwanted sexual fantasies, similar to flashbacks of their victimization. They are realistic, and the woman may recall the physical and psychological pain involved. The most frequently cited fantasy for why women fantasize of being forced into some sexual activity is that the fantasy avoids societally induced guilt—the woman does not have to admit responsibility for her sexual desires and behavior.

A study by Moreault and Follingstad was consistent with this hypothesis, and found that women with high levels of sex guilt were more likely to report fantasy themed around being overpowered, dominated, and helpless. In contrast, Pelletier and Herold used a different measure of guilt and found no correlation. Other research suggests that women who report forced sex fantasies have a more positive attitude fantasy sexuality, contradicting the guilt hypothesis.

Additionally, it said that force fantasies are clearly not the most common or the most frequent. Social views on sexual fantasy and sex in general differ throughout the world. The privacy of a person's fantasy is influenced greatly by social conditions. Because of the taboo status of sexual fantasies in many places around the world, open discussion—or even acknowledgment—is forbidden, forcing fantasies to stay private.
